In New Jersey, any serious study of the Revolutionary War inevitably leads to Morristown. More than just a waypoint, Morristown became the strategic and symbolic heart of the Continental Army during its darkest and most decisive years. Twice chosen by George Washington as a winter encampment, the area offered a rare combination of geographic advantage, local support, and defensibility. Surrounded by the ridgelines of the Watchung Mountains and positioned within striking distance of British-held New York, Morristown allowed Washington to protect his army while maintaining constant pressure on the enemy.
From 1777 and again during the brutal winter of 1779 to 1780, Morristown and the surrounding communities of Morris County functioned as the military nerve center of the American cause. It was here that the army endured, reorganized, and ultimately proved it could survive. In many ways, if Valley Forge was where the army was forged, Morristown was where it proved it could last.

April 18-19 Kickoff – Morristown National Historical Park & Jockey Hollow
To mark New Jersey’s role in the founding of the nation, Morristown will host a major kickoff weekend on April 18–19, bringing history back to life in the very place where the Continental Army once endured and organized. Centered around key historic sites including Morristown National Historical Park and Jockey Hollow, the weekend will feature living history demonstrations, Revolutionary War reenactments, guided tours, and family-friendly programming designed to connect visitors directly to the events of 1777 and 1779–1780.

Visitors can expect to see Continental soldiers in camp, experience demonstrations of 18th-century military life, and explore the grounds where George Washington and his army made critical decisions that shaped the outcome of the war.
More than just a commemoration, the Morristown kickoff serves as a reminder that this was not just a place where history happened, but where the American cause endured when it mattered most.
