America 250 connection:
"Few people realize that Hoboken's super family and America's Cup founder John Cox Stevens was the great-nephew of William Alexander, Washingtons key general and confidant known as Lord Stirling. Through Lord Stirling's sister Elizabeth Alexander, the Alexander family of Basking Ridge became directly connected to the Stevens family of Hoboken, one of the most influential transportation and sailing dynasties in American history.

Lord Stirling's sister, Elizabeth Alexander, married New Jersey statesman John Stevens II. Their son, John Stevens III, became one of America's great transportation innovators, while their grandson, John Cox Stevens, founded the New York Yacht Club and led the syndicate that won the first America's Cup in 1851."

John Cox Stevens was Lord Stirling's great-nephew.
