February 27, 2009

TRENTON – The New Jersey Historic Trust today announced its recommended list for 2008 Historic Preservation Grants. The list of recommended sites will go before the Garden State Preservation Trust on March 11th for ratification and then move on to the Legislature for approval. 60 projects at historic sites were selected and would receive a total of over $15.5 million in funding.

“The Historic Trust continues to make great strides in preserving New Jersey’s culture and historic sites,” said Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Joseph Doria. “This is indicative of Governor Corzine’s efforts to revitalize our state’s economy. Not only will this action preserve these sites, but it will help spur economic growth by attracting tourism to these areas.”

The New Jersey Historic Trust, a DCA affiliate, administers the grants from the Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund. The Trust Fund was created to promote historic preservation and encourage joint preservation efforts by the public and private sectors. It funds both capital projects and planning projects for historic preservation across the state.

This 2008 Historic Preservation Grant Round is devoted to Historic Sites Management Grants and Capital Preservation Grants. Historic Site Management Grants support non-construction activities such as conditions assessments, preservation plans, engineering reports, construction documents, landscape reports, archaeological assessments associated with historic site rehabilitation, green building retrofit analysis, and heritage tourism initiatives. Capital Preservation Grants support ‘bricks and mortar’ repair, restoration and rehabilitation of historic resources for continued active use. The maximum award is $50,000 for planning and $750,000 for capital construction. Special initiatives this year highlighted urban resources, heritage tourism, and projects not previously funded.
