Bernardsville Centennial History Moment:
1992 - Beloved Congresswoman Fenwick Dies.

On this day in local history in 1992: Millicent Fenwick, 82, the beloved former congresswoman who got her political start in Bernardsville, died at her home on Mendham Road on Wednesday morning, Sept. 16, 1992. She was born on February 25, 1910, in New York City and raised in Bernardsville.

Known at one time as "the conscience of the Congress," Mrs. Fenwick held office as a Borough Council member, state Assembly representative, state consumer affairs director, and member of the House of Representatives from 1975 to 1983. She was Gary Trudeau's inspiration for the cartoon character Lacey Davenport in the comic "Doonsbury. "
