Keepsake: Wildwood Arrives to NJ Historic Wooden Village Collection

The Governor of New Jersey’s Historic Village recently decreed that a new icon be added to the New Jersey Historic Wooden Village Collection in a bold move to expand the only set of New Jersey collectible icons. Introducing Wildwood, New Jersey. Wildwood, New Jersey, offers a captivating mix of natural beauty, history, and iconic culture that sets it apart from other beach destinations. Let’s dive into what makes Wildwood Beach, the boardwalk, its history, and its celebrated “doo-wop” culture so remarkable.

Wildwood Deserves Historic Accolades

Wildwood’s history dates back to the late 19th century when it began as a modest seaside resort. Originally a tiny fishing and farming community, it started attracting summer visitors in the 1890s after a railroad connecting it to major cities was completed. With increased accessibility, the area quickly became a bustling tourist destination. It was an overwhelming YES by the MLH Board of Trustees to add to the New Jersey Historic Wooden Village collection.

Get Your Piece of History – “Those Wildwood Days!”

Perhaps one of the most distinctive aspects of Wildwood’s character is its association with the “doo-wop” architectural style, which flourished during the 1950s and 1960s. The term “doo-wop” refers to a style of music that was popular during that era, but in Wildwood, it became synonymous with the unique, retro design of motels and hotels. These structures are characterized by bright neon lights, futuristic shapes, quirky signs, and themes that evoke the spirit of mid-century modernism and car culture.

The Wildwoods became a showcase for this kitschy, fun aesthetic, and many of these motels featured themes like Polynesian, space-age, and Hollywood. The vibrant architecture reflected the optimism and vitality of the post-war era, with bold colors and playful shapes that transported visitors to a carefree time of rock ‘n’ roll and drive-in diners.

Today, Wildwood’s doo-wop culture is carefully preserved, with many of these historic motels still in operation and recognized as an important part of American architectural heritage. The Doo-Wop Preservation League was founded to protect and promote mid-century architecture, and the Wildwoods even feature a “Doo-Wop Experience” museum, which offers a look into the style’s history and cultural significance.

Brooks Betz, a Mr. Local History Project member, presented the idea to the board, and they loved it. It seems that a few others also remembered the scene of being on Mindowaskin Pond in their early years. Anyone who has experienced it will remember it for sure. So, the board approved this limited edition collectible for the New Jersey Historic Village Collection. There will only be one production run at this point, so make sure you get yours while you can.
