Sipping The Somerset Hills – A History and Tasting Event

Delicious Heights Bedminster, New Jersey – Sunday October 1, 2023 3:30 – 5pm

SIPPING THE SOMERSET HILLS: A HISTORY AND TASTINGS EVENT

UPDATE: “It was a fantastic event. Do it again!”

WHAT A GREAT EVENT! Great historic tavern, great people, Ms. Meg had a great presentation and we want to do again. So get on our email list and we’ll let you know when we have another one scheduled.

Paula Axt, MLH volunteer and trustee hands out one of the samples to all who came out to the historic Delicious Heights in Bedminster, New Jersey. Other events at other locations are in the works.

About the Event

Enjoy a taste of history and actual tastings of pub and tavern beverages at a unique “virtual pub crawl” without leaving your seat! The program highlights the history of the Somerset Hills area and its taverns, samples of historic concoctions, and a fun and entertaining look at the social and business aspects of alcohol in the area over the centuries.

MLH is proud to bring this event to the Somerset Hills area based on the successful similar program held for the Westfield Historical Society. It fits right in with our mantra of sharing history with a social twist. However, you must be 21 or older to attend.

Join us as local historians Brooks Betz and Meg Wastie, both of Basking Ridge, have combed through numerous documents and periodicals to provide interesting stories of the area’s people and social practices from colonial times to the present. Each “chapter” visits the social aspects of taverns and inns and their importance to the residents of the time.

Participants will have actual “taste samples” of the time with small samples of drinks from the past: mead, metheglin, flips, grog and toddies.

EVENT ADDITION – Special Guest Author Michael Gabriele

Meet author and speaker Michael Gabriele as he shares his new book, Colonial Taverns of New Jersey. Autographed copies will be available for purchase.

Sponsored by the Mr. Local History Project (“History with a Social Twist!”), this unique event will occur at Delicious Heights, Bedminster (formerly Willie’s Tavern) on Sunday, October 1, from 3:30-5:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets ($25 per person) in advance, as seating is limited.

  • This sounds like an interesting and fun event for the community. Unfortunately I've committed to attend a wedding shower in Belmar, NJ and will be unable to attend. I look forward to joining future events.
