Finding New Jersey’s Giant Pizzas

Yes, in New Jersey, there are places making pizzas from 24″to 36″ that are very good —we call them Jersey’s Super Pizzas. My daughter is holding Fairfield, New Jersey’s Boardwalk Pizza’s famous pie.

People keep asking us why a non-profit is dedicated to researching New Jersey history and building food maps. The short answer is that history has what we call threads. We start researching one thing, which leads to another. We know there’s gotta be a history story in there, and we’ll just have to figure that out. In the meantime, MLHP just created a new map – Super Sized Pizzas of New Jersey – for those who want 24″ – 36″ pizzas.

El Presidente’s Giant Pizza Reviews

Some guys have all the fun – El Presidente on April 18, 2018, at Benny Tudino’s Pizza in Hoboken, New Jersey, home to Jersey’s largest pie (36 inches). A 6.8! Rates in my book.

The history of super-large pizzas, also known as “giant pizzas,” began in the late 20th century when pizzerias started experimenting with large pizzas to stand out in a competitive market. As pizza chains expanded globally, they recognized the opportunity to create oversized pizzas as a novelty for parties and events or to capture the attention of adventurous customers. These giant pizzas became an attraction, especially for those seeking to challenge themselves or serve large groups.

Pizza Record:
A NFL regulation football field, including the end zones, is about 120 yards (109.7 meters) long and 53.3 yards (48.8 meters) wide. The total area is about 5,300 square feet, or roughly 492 square meters. So, the pizza would be roughly 2.5 times the size of a football field.

Italian Pizza Creation Record

One of the most famous moments in the history of giant pizzas occurred in 1990 when an Italian team in Rome created a pizza that measured a staggering 1261.65 square meters (13,580.28 square feet). Known as “The Ottavia,” this pizza was designed for its size and to promote a message of peace and unity. The pizza was made with traditional ingredients like mozzarella, tomato, and basil, and its shape resembled Italy’s. This attempt helped solidify the idea of giant pizzas as an impressive and fun spectacle.

Today, while giant pizzas are still sometimes created for world records or special events, they are no longer a regular feature on most pizza menus. However, large pizzas remain a popular option for big gatherings, and many pizzerias still offer extra-large sizes for those seeking a more impressive meal. The super-big pizza continues to symbolize creativity in the food world, pushing the limits of what’s possible with this beloved dish.

A 4.8 – oh well.
