Millridge is where I was a member. Lots of fun summer days. Bill Friars was our swim team coach. Ridge High Class of 66 had their after-graduation party there. The big dance move then was “the locomotion”

I was one of the fortunate children who got to grow up at Clover Hill. It was truly a magical place where we learned many life skills and gained may life long friends. My whole family, at one time or another, worked for Bailey Brower. My oldest sister was the assistant water front director at Noe Pond (sister club in Chatham) where she directed water ballet shows with Bailey Brower’s daughter. My brother was head life guard at Copper Springs and my younger sister and myself were life guards at Cover Hill. Later, my brothers’ wife became Browers’ administrative assistant. During our younger years we came up through the ranks of learning to swim as we earned badges that allowed us more access to the lake and dock. We swam on the swim team, played on the tennis team, participated in the water ballet shows (my mom sewed costumes), and participated in all the fun activities the club offered. It was a wonderful childhood.
My life has brought me to NC but one year I went back to visit after the houses were built. The club as I knew it was haunting ghost town. The club house and dock were still there and even the swim team lanes were still in the water. But the place was overgrown with cattails and the dock wasn’t safe to walk on. There was a plaque that had fallen on the floor of the porch that still listed the tennis round robin teams with names of people I knew. It was a sad sight for me and seeing the picture of what it is today, the pond, is sad too, yet beautiful. I am thankful for my memories.

I was young , but I remember learning how to swim at Copper Hill! They’re we’re frogs there too—right? I vaguely remember catching frogs.

Spent almost every day there in the summers, packing up a lunch picnic and staying until late afternoon. Scrounging for loose change in the car to spend at the candy stand. I still remember #77 was our member number, and all of our sand tools and buckets had the number written on it. Babysat kids while mothers played tennis, eventually joined the tennis and swim teams. Completed the golden dolphin badge! So many memories!

Growing up in Basking Ridge, if you were lucky you either belonged to Clover Hill or Pennbrook. My mom hated sand so we were Pennbrook members. But I also loved being a guest of friends who belonged to Clover Hill.
