It all started when a photographer from the Newark Star-Ledger rented an airplane on July 2, 2017, to take photos of the closed public park beaches. He had a hunch that maybe, just maybe, Christie, whose governor summer home is on one of those beaches (Island Beach State Park). He hit gold and got his shot – Christie on a closed state beach. The rest is what happens when stories go viral on the internet. Shortly after the image was posted, Photoshop editors went to work and started posting pictures on the web.
