Friday, May 24 is the day where the community gives back to Bernards Township with acts of community service and pride.
It’s called Bernards Township Day, celebrated annually on the day of the townships founding- May 24, 1760.
It is NOT Charter Day, a street fair held typically the third Saturday in May. But this year, both events happen on the same day!!!!

Bernards Township Day commemorates a day of community service to be held every May 24th – the same day as May 24, 1760 granting of a township Charter by King George II of England, establishing Bernardston Township. May 24th is a day dedicated where residents give back to Bernards Township by doing a good deed for the township.

The 3rd annual “Township Day of Service and Pride” has been the topic of discussion with many non-profit organizations thinking how to give back to the community in a fun and spirited way that shares in the community spirit of the township on one day for everyone and build on last years inaugural event.

In the past, many in the township join the Bernards Charter Day Street fair and festival, put on annually by the Bernards Township Recreation Commission. But Bernards Township Day, held every year on May 24th is a “local day of service” for the community where residents give back to their township with what is a “good deed’ or “Day of Service” that focuses on the community. Many local non-profit organizations will showcase volunteer community service opportunities throughout the day. Local businesses will offer specials that benefit residents and give back. Educators will be working with kids on a variety of activities during the day as well.

Why May 24th You Say

So why May 24th you ask? A great question. May 24th is the day back in 1760 when King George II dedicated in a charter the official recognition of Bernardston to Sir Francis Bernard, the Royal Governor of New Jersey. Bernardston later became known as Bernards Township. What better day to recognize a community spirit day could there be other than May 24th. So now you know.

The Mr. Local History Project will participate in Bernards Township Day by working with local educators providing community service for students to learn about local history and engage in an activity, assignment, or purpose to give back to the town they live in.

Mr. Local History’s Project Local History Ambassador Will Honor Bernards Township Day

The Mr. Local History Project will hold assemblies to share the history and give a custom made Bernards Township flag to every 5th grade student in Cedar Hill, Liberty Corner, Mt. Prospect, and Oak Street school over multiple years until every student has a Bernards Township flag and knows the history of the flag and the Charter of Bernardston.
